Overview A new 10-story research building will join the recently completed Center for Integrated Science on Drexel Avenue to bring all the major biomedical research into close proximity. The Center for Integrated Science, under construction since 2001 and completed in 2005, houses the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research, the James Franck Institute, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Department of Chemistry. The new Center for Biomedical Discovery, to be completed by winter 2007, is slated to house research groups from the Department of Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics, and the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center. The new research building will be constructed in place of nine greystone houses and apartment buildings between 5661 and 5629 S. Drexel Avenue. The building will be on the northeast corner of Drexel and 57th, with an elevated pedway across 57th Street to the Center for Integrated Science to the south.
